For the past few mornings, I've been wondering why the bird feeders were completely empty when I went out to fill them for the day. Night visitors such as the flying squirrels usually leave only a small pile of husks beside a little bare spot. When we had the deer at the feeders two years ago, there were always some seeds left. But this year was different - there wasn't a single seed in either the tray or the tube feeder - and no hints as to what had happened. Last night at eleven o'clock the mystery was solved. We have three racoons that are visiting nightly ! Two stay on the ground below the feeders while one climbs up a tree and hangs upside down as it crawls hand over hand out along the clothesline. I've never seen anything quite like this !
