These four timber wolves were sighted near where Paynes Creek enters Loon Lake at 4:40PM today. It didn't take too long to realize that they were gathering to plan a hunt for their dinner. And what an excellent place to hunt since deer are being fed at two locations on the Loon Lake Road ! To watch the wolves hunting for their dinner was absolutely fascinating ! The three wolves left the lake as a group and headed into the bush by Neighbours Lane while the lone wolf stayed behind on the lake. The lone wolf travelled back and forth along the shoreline, out about 25 yards - as it waited for a deer to be chased out onto the ice ; where it would quickly be taken down. Occasionally, the lone wolf would make a mad dash along the shore and then abruptly change direction - following the chase on land.
It wasn't long before it got dark, so we don't know how successful the wolves were at getting a deer, and we didn't hear any of the characteristic howling or yelping.
We plan on visiting the area tomorrow to look for signs of their success.
