The term "solar event" is used by local skywatchers to describe an opportunity to view and perhaps photograph something extraordinary in the sky, during daytime hours. Here's a photo of something we frequently see when the temperatures fall quite low at this time of year. Outside, the sky is clear, it's full sunlight, and the temperature is about -15 degC. You can also see a contrail of a high flying airplane to the right of the vertical "flare". The vertical "flare" is like a rainbow, except this is formed from ice crystals.
