Around Loon Lake - A Hint of Spring

Spring continues to arrive, but very slowly. Geese are back in the Burnt River and Redwinged Blackbirds are in the area. Sea Gulls return daily to Gull Islands and sit on the rock tips even though there is no available water.

I have made preparations with the Ministry of Natural Resources for this year's "Walleye Watch" program that surveys spawning walleye habitat in the various streams surrounding our lake. This year we plan on studying not only the Gull Islands spawning bed but the newly replaced Gregory Road culvert with it's new rock substrate recommended for fish passage.

I will have more on the "Walleye Watch" program in a future article.

Roads around Loon Lake remain clear as far as they are normally plowed. There is about eight inches of snow in the bush and ice on lakes in the area is reported to be about twelve inches thick. There is some visible water around the shorelines but ice isn't really moving "out" from the shores yet. There is minimal snow on roofs.
