An Efficient Hunter
This little animal is a Least Weasel. It's similar in body dimensions to a Chipmunk but with a body length of about seven inches. These weasels are efficient hunters of animals several times their size. They hide in the snow and are almost invisible because of their white winter coat! Often all that gives them away is the black tip on their tail that you'll see as they run. We don't see them that often in this area but every few winters we're lucky! This one was busy trying to catch Chickadees and Blue Jays that were feeding on the ground on New Year's Day. We've seen weasels chasing squirrels into the tree tops and jumping after the squirrels as they try to escape a fateful outcome.
