A Busy Heronry

If you look closely at this photo, you'll see a Great Blue Heron hunkered down in it's nest. This year there are three heron nests, all occupied and in our "Loon Lake Heronry". The nesting area is located in a fairly remote area and is not acceptable at all - this photo was taken with a 72X telephoto lens!

You've likely seen some Herons around the lake during the summer and if you're lucky enough, you'll see them catching frogs or minnows along the shoreline.

They are quite large, grey in colour, with a long neck and long legs. What is surprising is that their flight is so graceful it is almost unbelievable!
