Around Loon Lake - September 22/16

Earlier this week, I posted a warning on the Loon Lake Facebook page about fast moving dump trucks on the Gregory Lane.

That’s because there has been a lot of construction vehicles using the Gregory Lane; not just dump trucks, but heavy equipment like excavators and bulldozers.

And that’s because there are several properties under various stages of construction.

With all of this activity, I expected that something would happen. And it did; some heavy equipment has damaged the westerly curb on the cement slab over the big culvert on the Gregory Lane. Looking at the damage, it was very recent and chunks of concrete are scattered beside the curb. The heavy equipment has also been crossing the concrete slab without any wooden protection being laid between the steel tracks and the concrete; leaving marks on the slab. And one piece of equipment even drove over the culvert top fill - off the slab!

That’s irresponsible!

With all of this activity, and if it continues, I can only imagine the effect it will have on the Gregory Lane come Springtime 2017!

Different from all of the construction activity on the West Shore, it’s been fairly quiet on the lake, with only a couple of boats seen and with very few lights on at night.

There are still loons on the lake; some geese and ducks in the river; and a lone cormorant visiting the shoal in front of our home a couple of times per day in search of a meal. All of our winter birds have returned and we have started putting out a small amount of birdseed.

While we were recently visiting Northern Ontario, it sure is nice to be back home!
